I seem to recall that in the Dune Encyclopedia, Earth was whacked by an asteroid. It was still inhabited, but became a backwater, whose identity was forgotten. It may have even become one of the planets of Tupile.

In the distant year of 10191, all the planets of the known Universe are under the control of Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV and the most important commodity in the Universe is a substance called the spice “MELANGE” which is said to have the power of extending life, expanding the consciousness and even to “fold space”; being able to travel to any distance without physically moving. I seem to remember in either C of D or GE of Dune one of the characters was in possession of a hermetically preserved Van Gogh painting.
He just became the druglord of the universe. This is a larger version of Escobar’s Colombia.

Sting’s hair was done PERFECTLY in this movie. Like something straight out of anime. Very authentic. I can’t wait for the remake. And that says a LOT because I am sick of remakes.

It’s funnier than that – Patrick Stewart played Gurney Halleck in the movie. The character is a soldier and musician – he plays a stringed instrument called a baliset. In the movie it looks like a futuristic sitar. sort of.
This is the channel which encouraged me to explore more of the DUNE universe and eventually led me to get the first Frank Herbert book in the series. So far, I am quite enjoying it. Thanks for all your DUNE videos and I can’t wait to see the movie next year (as well as your latest book analysis.
Funny I had a very similar experience when I met Sting & the Police in the Cherry Hill Mall in N.J. on October 22, 1978 (only know the exact date with the help of Google/Wikipedia. They were appearing at a music store ‘Sound Odyssey’ to promote their first US tour and were giving out free tickets for their show that night in Philadelphia at a venue called Grendel’s Lair (long since closed. Heard people murmuring outside it’s the Police, it’s the Police. Being 12 y/o and not very musically inclined at the time asked my friends out loud Who are the Police. They were all dressed in long black leather trench coats and had multiple camera’s draped around their necks so definitely stuck out in the crowd. My friend John asked them for a ticket. He (Sting) said sorry you have to be 18. John informed him that his brother was 18 so Sting gave him a ticket. Later in my teen years they became one of my favorite bands. Fast forward to 19 July, 2007 just shy of 30 years later finally saw them live for the first time at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia with over forty two thousand other people. Think I payed around 60 for nose-bleed seats but at least I was there.

In the 11th millennium, Shaddam IV, ruler of the Galactic Empire, rids himself of his competitor Duke Leto Atreides by giving him control of the desert planet Dune also called Arrakis; fully aware that its present owner, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, will not give it up without a fight. The reason is that Arrakis is the source of the valuable spice, a substance produced by enormous and dangerous sandworms, which bestows special mental qualities on anyone who consumes it. A short while later Harkonnen does indeed succeed in ambushing and massacring Leto and his men. Leto’s mistress Lady Jessica, who is a member of the clairvoyant order of Bene Gesserit, manages to escape into the desert with her son Paul, and after a long and dangerous march they finally encounter the Fremen, the long suppressed desert tribe of Arrakis. Impressed by Paul’s clairvoyant abilities, tribal prince Stilgar takes in the fugitives. Very soon the Fremen are convinced that Paul is their long-prophesied redeemer…

Well, this is the funniest thing I’ve seen all day.
One of my favorite movie.
Lynch had several possible endings in the works. In one, Paul makes it snow. In another, it’s hail. In yet another, it’s more of a freezing rain with occasional sleet. He had all the possibilities covered.
